About the Residency

Maritime Arts and Inspiration Center (MAIC) is part of International Field Studies, a 38 year- old non-profit educational organization located on Andros Island in the Bahamas. MAIC residencies serve as a platform for artistic exchange between international artists and the master carvers, fiber artists, and boat builders native to Andros.  MAIC operates year-round based in a renovated schoolhouse with a variety of educational programming.  Artist Residencies at MAIC are offered periodically for one or two week sessions with the purpose of bringing together professional artists who can experience the island as a group. Individual residencies are also occasionally accepted.

How MAIC Works

Residencies are offered in a one week and two week long session accepting a total of eight to ten artists per session.  Artists are invited to submit applications throughout the year.  The applications are reviewed and ranked by a panel of artists and arts professionals.

A Green Residency

MAIC is committed to celebrate the rich cultural history of Andros-- without unnecessary environmental impacts. The center focuses on exciting alternative energy strategies, such as solar and wind produced electricity, passive solar hot water showers, a bio fuels 36ft sailboat, and a humanure producing incinerating toilet. MAIC is an inspiring rural ocean program that requires no experience but a willingness to experiment, to be immersed in the natural environment.

Important Information

The Maritime Arts and Inspiration Center is a natural product. The intent is to immerse the artist in the natural wonders of wind, sun, coral reefs and forests. There are seasonal rains, insects and exposures that are not typical of the built environment. Andros is a vast outdoor experience not to be missed.
